Buenos Aires is often called the Paris of the South. The numerous shops and boutiques, the architecture, cultural life, the cosmopolitan population of Italian, Spanish, French, German, English, Eastern European, Arab and Asian origin.

Due to the many economic problems the city has lost much of its former grandeur . BA had its golden age between 1880 and 1920, when Argentina was one of the ten wealthiest countries of the world. Thanks to the export of corns, hides and meat.  The profits were used to develop the industry.

In the period Peron, Inflation started to rise to eventually 700%. It took until 1991 to start a successfully anti-inflation program. The national currency pegged to the US dollar, causing inflatoir declineer at the end of the nineties to only 1%. Furthermore, state enterprises were privatized and the government spending sharply reduced. This was followed again by a recession and the economic crisis. Unemployment is still a major problem.
